Hello, my name is Kalina, what’s your name? We can be friends. I don’t have many friends now that everyone is fighting. Only my brother. He is my best friend, he looks after me, and says everything will be alright. He went to look for our uncle, who will come for us and take us far away from the angry people who fight each other. And then mommy and daddy will come back.

–Kalina's Description

Overview[]

Kalina is one of the The Little Ones exclusive Playable Characters. She is a War Orphan who is now under the survivors' care while her brother Grozdan looks for help from their uncle.

As a child, Kalina plays vastly differently from adults. She is much more incapable than adults and requires extensive care. If properly looked after, she can passively raise the morale of every adult in the shelter. If she reaches a critical state, she won't die but simply leave the shelter, possibly with another adult.

Kalina's in-game appearance

Appearance[]

Kalina wears a red hoodie jacket, a pair of jeans, and a red beanie.

Personality[]

Kalina shares her archetype "kid" with all other children. Innocence is a major theme in her depiction; she's largely unaware of the war's true impact and the morally questionable sides of the citizens in their struggle to survive. She's heavily affected by all events that directly impacts her (like suffering from negative states), or that she can witness (like a survivor's death or a neighbor's request). On the other hand, events that she can't witness (such as any deeds done by a scavenger) affect her very little, likely because the adults lie about or omit the details of the events, as her diary entries suggest. As a child, she has her own traumatic responses, such as throwing tantrums, wetting the bed, or becoming catatonic.

Kalina comes without a guardian by default. She can be attached to a single adult survivor by talking to them enough times. From that point on, she's extremely affected by events happening to the guardian. More empathetic survivors get attached more easily than less empathetic ones. If her guardian dies, she will be permanently locked into her worst ending.

Strategy[]

The information below applies to all children.

Kalina's abilities are very limited. She can't scavenge outdoors, guard the shelter, talk to neighbors, use bandages or medications on herself, and craft most items and fittings. She can be taught to do various tasks, which allows her to help with daytime chores if all the adults are unavailable. However, it takes her twice the time adults require to do a task.

It is important to take good care of Kalina, which might be an easier task than it sounds. Items used to recover from negative states improve her states by 2 levels instead of 1 like adults. For example, a Cooked Meal gets her from hungry to well-fed, and Medications gets her from severely ill to slightly sick. She also gets happier simply from playing with toys or talking with other adults. She will pay off by immensely increasing the morale of everyone in the shelter. With the presence of a consistently content and/or well-fed child, and if the player commits no bad deeds, it is possible for every single adult to become permanently content, including the egoists (Bruno, Roman, and Emilia). Inversely, a child doing poorly will make others sadder as well.

Recruitment Speech[]

Hi, I’m Grozdan and this is my younger sister Kalina. We have no place to stay, but our uncle has a house on the outskirts. I can try to reach him, if you look after Kalina for a couple of days. She’s a good girl, she won’t cause any trouble. You look kind-hearted, will you please help us?

–Grozdan

Character Story[]

  1. "I love mommy and daddy very much. Mommy sings, and brushes my hair, and daddy reads me bedtime stories, and takes me horse riding. I really miss them both, but I understand why they have to be away."
  2. "Those people are fighting now, and this is all very sad, so mommy and daddy went to heaven to ask the angels to make them stop. It´s important, so we must stay here with you or with our uncle until they come back... and they promised that we would go to Africa and that it would be great!"
  3. "In Africa we’ll have adventures like the heroes of my favorite book, “In Desert and Wilderness”. Daddy used to read it to me before I went to sleep. It’s about a little girl Nel and her older friend Staś, who is brave and good, and just like Grozdan."
  4. "Nel and Staś are kidnapped by some bad people, but then escape and have adventures. They travel, meet lions, and even make friends with an elephant! And in the end they meet their parents again and everyone is happy! It will be the same with us, won’t it?"

Traumatized variants:[]

  1. "I miss mommy and daddy a lot. My hair is dirty and not brushed, and no one reads me bedtime stories or takes me horse riding. I don’t understand why they have to be away, I need them!"
  2. "There are so many bad people everywhere now. Bad people want to hurt you. If mommy and daddy were here, nobody would hurt us. But they’re not. They can’t protect us. Grozdan says they are happy now, but how can they be happy without us? I want them back, I want them to take us to Africa, like they promised…"
  3. "I want to have adventures in Africa like Nel and Staś, the heroes of my favorite book, “In Desert and Wilderness”. Here in the city only bad things happen. I want to be far away with mommy and daddy and Grozdan. Why hasn’t he come back yet? He would never leave me behind, would he?"
  4. "Even though there were people fighting in Africa too, Staś would never leave Nel, except for one time when he went to look for medicine for her. Grozdan will soon be back, won’t he? I really want him back. And my parents too… I’m not crying, it’s just… I have something in my eye…"

Endings[]

Spoiler Warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ending
Type
Ending Description
Dead "N/A"
Suicide "N/A"
Abandoned "One night, Kalina left the relative safety of the shelter to look for her brother. The other survivors would never hear of her again."
Rejected "The pleas of the young boy to look after his sister until he came back fell on deaf ears. What happened to those children afterwards had better remain a secret."
Karma "Grozdan managed to reach their uncle’s house, but there was no one there. He came back for Kalina as soon as the ceasefire came into effect. With no adult guardians, they ended up in an orphanage. It was a sad childhood, as they grew up traumatized by the war, having only each other. They never went to Africa."
Sad "Despite the odds, Grozdan managed to reach their uncle, who took them in as soon as the siege was lifted. Even though her uncle’s family did all they could, Kalina remained a melancholic and quiet child, always reading or daydreaming to escape the real world that had been so harsh to her."
Good "When the fighting was over, Grozdan came back for Kalina. Their uncle’s family was alright andtook them in as their own. They helped Kalina cope with the loss of her parents. She remained religious and many years after the war in Graznavia, she went to Africa with a charity, to help the children there."
