Many characters in the game have an Addiction to either cigarettes or coffee.

Overview[]

While satisfying their addictions can help stave off depression or relieve them from it, not satisfying them has the opposite effect.

Smokers will consume a set number of cigarettes per day (in the base game, this number is always three). Coffee drinkers will consume 1 coffee and 1 clean water per day. The resources are automatically deducted from your inventory at the beginning of each day.

Strategy[]

Ensuring a smoker (or coffee drinker) has access to at least one cigarette (or one coffee + clean water) every three days is often enough to satisfy them. However, failing to provide the addict their 'fix' over a longer period of time results in a mood penalty. A sad addict will make negative remarks like "Damn, where are my cigarettes?" - The penalty can be avoided by scavenging for the different types of cigarettes, buying them from a Trader, or by creating them in the Shelter itself.

Addicts will consume their 'fix' in the shelter overnight, assuming that they are either sleeping or guarding. A scavenging addict will not consume anything overnight, possibly making them go into withdrawal. Rotating addicts for scavenging duties (e.g. scavenging with Roman one night, then Arica the next night) will help ensure every addict gets their 'fix' regularly.

Some archetypes seem less likely to become sad due to an unsatisfied addiction. For example, Boris (an altruist) seems less bothered by it, while Roman, Emilia and Bruno (all egoists) seem more prone to becoming unhappy.
